I Did Not Drive Back in a Blizzard Today
These are lines that ran through my head on the drive back from Idaho Falls. Something about the rhythm of the title stuck with me, but I'm not sure I've got the other lines right yet, so it's a work in progress. Constructive comments on it appreciated.
I did not drive back in a blizzard today
(though snowfall in town raised my hopes)
snow stuck on the grass, on the bridges
but no white curtain hung from the clouds
I did not drive back in a blizzard today
five miles down the road only white dust remained
no drifts to cushion the roadside
no ice to launch unwary tires
I did not drive back in a blizzard today
nor did a wall of white impede vision
nor slush thrust back from slow semis
dry bare roads rumbled under the studs
I did not drive back in a blizzard today
clouds glowered impotently above
and spat a few desultory flakes
and that was all
I did not drive back in a blizzard today.
