Gas Statistics

Disclaimer: I'm a mathemetician with a physics background. I find this stuff interesting.

I found all but one of my gas receipts, and the one I didn't find I actually remember relatively well. That was the 47 mpg receipt. I remember the mpg, and that it was roughly 7.4 gallons, and that the price was $3.039 per gallon (the highest I paid through the trip). And for those desperate to know, my gas stops were: Caldwell, ID; Olympia, WA; Kelso, WA; The Dalles, OR; Caldwell, ID. Incidentally, avoid Caldwell, exit 29, when traffic is heavy. On the way out, it was early enough in the day that it wasn't bad. On the way back, MASSIVE traffic jam.

So, including my estimate for Kelso, I used a total of 49.835 gallons of gas, at an average cost of $2.902 per gallon, in 1924 miles. Ooooh... I just realized I have a
real, live data set for my stats class next fall! Must remember to save numbers... Anyway, that puts me at 38.6 mpg overall, but I haven't used all the gas I bought at Caldwell(2) yet. Estimating again, on the trip out it took 7.677 gallons to get to Caldwell, leaving 4.223 in the tank... (my tank holds 11.9 gallons for some odd reason). Which brings the overall average to 42.2 mpg. *grins* I love my car.

Okay, no one else will be interested, but before I lose the receipts, I'm going to write out the data set. That will make it easy to find in the fall. I hope.

Pocatello : 9.354 gallons, $2.699 per gallon, $25.25 total
Caldwell(1): 7.677 gallons, $2.839 per gallon, $21.80 total
???
Olympia: 8.425 gallons, $3.049 per gallon, $25.69 total
The Dalles: 7.545 gallons, $2.949 per gallon, $22.25 total
Caldwell: 9.434 gallons, $2.879 per gallon, $27.16 total
