Here is a good article from Lawyers, Guns, and Money about trying to interpret the Constitution according to "original intent." I can think of several other documents to which this argument should be applied...
Written by a practitioner of mathematics, philosophy, taiji, gluten-free cooking, chant, meditation, gardening, and renovation, with no particular end in mind. Were there an end, it would come too soon, and the Path would cease to Wander.

A legal scholar named Sanford Levinson wrote a good book called "Constitutional Faith" which compares "Catholic" and "Protestant" ways of reading the Cosntitution...in a way, reading religious texts involves a lot of the same issues.
